The essentials of playing Crossword

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Crossword. Fill every open square so the intersecting Across and Down answers match their clues. Use the example below to understand a decision. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Solve 24 connected 15×15 layouts with 11–20 entries each. Use the original English clues and scroll the board on narrow screens; completed layouts may appear again.

Give this approach a try

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill every open square so the intersecting Across and Down answers match their clues. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Keep the controls in easy reach.

How to proceed

  1. Choose a numbered Across or Down clue to highlight its answer.
  2. Select a square and type a letter, or use the on-screen alphabet.
  3. Shared letters belong to both crossing answers. Selecting a shared square twice changes direction.
  4. Use Check entries to review entered letters. Reveal selected supplies one letter and counts as help.
  5. Complete every open square to solve the puzzle. Dark squares are not filled.

Keyboard and screen controls

Select a clue or square. Use your physical keyboard or the on-screen letters, Erase, Check entries and Reveal selected. Scroll within the board on a narrow screen. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

Put the rules into context

For the clue “A very high natural elevation of land”, the answer is MOUNTAIN. It occupies 8 squares, and each crossing uses the same letter. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Avoid this misunderstanding

Do not fill dark squares. A letter that fits one answer must also fit the crossing clue. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
