Getting started with Lights Out

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Lights Out. Turn every light off. Every supplied starting state is made by valid flips from an all-off board and is therefore solvable. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

A small practice goal

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

The objective of a round

Turn every light off. Every supplied starting state is made by valid flips from an all-off board and is therefore solvable. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Select a light or an unlit tile.
  2. The selected tile and its orthogonal neighbours switch state.
  3. Plan flips so that previously cleared rows stay cleared.
  4. Use Undo to try another approach.

How to interact with the game

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.

Try this example

Tapping the centre changes five cells. Tapping a corner changes three. Diagonal neighbours are not affected. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Where a round can go wrong

An unlit tile can still be tapped; it may be necessary to solve the board. Check the rule before repeating the action. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
